The Importance of Annual Nutritional Testing following Bariatric surgery

Annual nutritional monitoring and lifelong nutritional supplementation should be introduced following any bariatric surgery, however although this may be recommended, a 2021 study reported that patients who have bariatric surgery are not receiving the recommended nutritional monitoring after their surgery. This is especially so when the original surgery was carried out abroad, as many patients who opt for surgery abroad do so because they don’t meet the criteria for bariatric surgery funded by the NHS. However, this subsequently may mean they also do not then qualify for NHS funded bariatric follow-up care, including nutrient testing.
The introduction of lifelong consistent nutritional supplementation is also necessary, as even the best-balanced diet will not provide sufficient nutrients due to the restricted intake. Regular, annual monitoring is needed to ensure optimal levels continue to be maintained, to support ongoing physical, emotional and mental health.
However, the vast choice of multivitamin and mineral supplements available from a variety of sources vary greatly their composition, efficacy, and quality, with many not containing sufficient levels of key nutrients as recommended by the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society. Consideration needs to be given to their format, with sublingual, liquids and powders being preferable to enhance absorption.
Ideally, an annual post-surgery comprehensive screening profile should consider the following.
- Haematology & biochemistry
- Iron
- Ferritin
- Folate
- Vitamin B12
- Magnesium
- Vitamin D
- Zinc
- Copper
- Selenium
- Vitamin A, E & K
However, not all of the above will be available via the NHS, and when obtaining any via your GP is not an option, there are other private companies who can offer such tests, some of which are available via an at-home finger prick test kit.
Consulting a nutrition professional who has knowledge and experience of working with both interpreting test results and recommending appropriate supplements, is a must to avoid a lack of appropriate nutrition and to maximise ongoing health and wellbeing.
