Psychological Therapy After Bariatric Surgery : Benefits to Consider

When a person lives in a larger body there are many factors that play a part, metabolism, genetics, environmental factors and psychological factors too.  Surgery can support with some of these factors, but a bariatric patient may need to spend time tackling psychological issues such as a dysfunctional relationship with food, emotional eating, binge eating or body image issues in general if they want to achieve bariatric success.

Alongside these pre-existing issues the bariatric process itself may lead to a range of psychological challenges that will also need to be managed and overcome such as depression, grief, anxiety, food phobias, malnutrition, eating disorders, addiction transference, neurodivergence and general wellness and wellbeing.

Our team of Associate Therapists provide 1:1 and group support to help bariatric patients with these challenges whether they are pre-surgery or post-surgery.

The Benefits of Discussing Your Issues with one of our therapists

Many bariatric surgery patients discuss the changing relationship to food with our therapists. Our team of registered and fully qualified therapists can suggest new ways of thinking, or ways to modify old behaviours to help address the patient’s needs. Changes to the body are also common, and many patients do discuss matters related to body image, loose skin, and so forth with their therapist.

Our team of compassionate, empathetic professionals can also work with other underlying matters that may have contributed to a person’s mental health or weight issues, through the sessions.

The Benefits of Seeking Support Groups Online

When a therapist is not available, or a patient does not feel ready for 1:1 work then group support is available through our Online Support Meetings, Facebook Community, Online forums, or other resources that connects to other bariatric patients. Sharing stories, offering a boost to others, and creating an extended sense of community among people who share in the same struggles can be very beneficial to a patients psychological wellbeing.

Therapy as Part of Long-Term Surgical Success

Studies have found that bariatric surgery patients who undergo therapy are more likely to achieve and maintain long-term weight loss success. Sadly not all weight loss surgery hospitals and clinics provide this important intervention and not all national health care services have the funding to offer it to all patients either and so here at the Centre for Bariatric Support, we aim to fill that gap and make sure bariatric patients get the full support package to help the achieve bariatric success.
